Rittenhouse, with Candy Corn

Sheena has been on the road, visiting Rittenhouse Needlepoint in Philadelphia between other vacation stops. She's amazed at how much the shop has grown and changed since her first visit right after it opened.  It's a fun read, and Sheena has thrown in a Halloween treat--a chart for candy corn!

Yummy.

She also has been visiting Bedecked and Beaddazzled in Baltimore.  Check out the fun canvases and another great stitch diagram....

Finishing Friday: Halloween and More

For today's finishing Friday we head to Louise's Needlework.  The shop shows off a darling Halloween pumpkin tray perfect for the Phantom of the Opera fan.  This canvas is from Alice Peterson and the tray from Sudberry.

Also for Halloween, one of Louise's customers just finished her Halloweenies witch.  Canvas is by Kelly Clark and guide by Amy Bunger.

Ridgewood's Kappy has a fun Halloween tree and several wonderful stand ups.

Not everyone is a big Halloween fan so here is a great mermaid pillow with fabulous pearls trim.  I think that the canvas is by Alice Peterson.

Winter Farm Fun in Connecticut

Linda went to Enriched Stitch's fall retreat in Connecticut and has posted about the experience. The canvas they were all stitching is called :Winter Farm Fun."  It's one of Ewe and Eye's rustic rural scenes, stitched by Suzy Vallerie and taught by her and her fabulous shop team.
http://blog.njneedleartists.org/2014/10/24/shopping/

While there she discovered one of my secret weapons--light coverage stitches!

In Stitches Does Halloween

In Stitches is the counted thread shop (with knitting and needlepoint) close to the entrance to Woodlawn Plantation. They offer a lot of counted and cross stitch patterns but they also have needlepoint, so I wasn't totally surprised when their Halloween blog posting featured two wonderful needlepoint patterns.  First there's Shelly Tribbey's skeleton in a top hat, perfect for the Halloween dandy!  I think finishing this in a little coffin would be perfect!
http://institchesshopblog.blogspot.com/2014/10/the-victoria-sampler-trunk-show-and-more.html

The photo of the Quilted Jack o' Lantern (fourth from the bottom) is a counted canvaswork classic from Pat Timpanaro of Neon Flamingo.  I hope this chart is still available.  It's a fun sampler of stitches for the fan of counted work.

Sometimes you can find great designs in the most unlikely places....

The Egyptian Cat Returns

Sepals at Base of Lotus Blossom

As you can probably tell, I'm stitching the Egyptian Cat from Tapestry Fair again.  The design is called Cleo's Cat and it's painted on 18 count canvas.  I call her Catra, short for CleoCATra.  The design is 10 inches wide by 11 1/2 tall, so she's a pretty big girl.  Recently I've been working on the lotus pillars that flank Catra.
http://www.tapestryfair.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=79&Itemid=1

I discovered something interesting when I started to do the lotus flower sepals in padded satin stitches.  When I used the thicker Felicity's Garden (green) or Silk and Ivory (blue), I could use horizontal stitches over the padding.

When I used the thinner Impressions (purple), the satin stitches had to be on the diagonal to cover in one layer.  Diagonal stitches cover better than horizontal or vertical ones!

In the photo above you can see the vertical padding in the blue and purple sepals on the left side partly covered by horizontal and diagonal satin stitches.

Experiment a bit with this on some scrap canvas and you'll see what I mean.  Try doing brick stitches and then do Mosaic stitches with the same thread, then switch to a thicker (or thinner) one and do the stitches again.  It's amazing how much better Mosaic stitches cover if your thread is on the skimpy side.

The Beaded Drizzle Stitch

Mary Corbet may be an embroiderer, but she's up-to-date on the needlepoint world's new trend--adding beads to stitches. Here is how to top your drizzle stitch with a bead. Not familiar with drizzle stitch? Not to worry--Mary has links to a video on how to do this stitch in the article.

Once you read through it, you'll be ready to create tangled dreadlocks for your witch or snake hair for your gorgon!

Stitching Abbey's Stocking

The Faith of a Spider blog just posted progress photos of the stocking she is stitching. It is one of the elaborate Tapestry Tent designs now distributed by Susan Roberts. The details are amazing, but note how some things were omitted or changed to better suit the stitcher. You don't have to slavishly follow the painted design on your canvas if you don't want to.   That's an important lesson to learn as a stitcher--trust your own taste and style.

Snowflakes and Other Effects

This is how to add falling leaves, snowflakes, etc. to your blog.  First, add an HTML widget to your layout.  Copy/paste the codes from this site into the open widget window, making sure you switch to HTML before you paste the code into the box.  Save.   The effect will last until you remove the widget or erase the code in the box.

Just in time for Halloween We of the Needle has special scissors cases. Or should I say scissors caskets? LOL

I have no idea of the price or how sturdy these little boxes are, but here is their website, in case you need some of their Halloween boxes for decorating or tool storage.  I know Halloween isn't everyone's favorite holiday but if you love it, perhaps a new scissors case or tiny Halloween box for your rots from We of the Needle is just right for you.

Fun Fur from 1887

Thanks to Needlepoint for Fun's newsletter, I discovered this blog written by the Engligh embroiderer Sue Jones featuring a tutorial for replicating a Victorian fur stitch .  It is from an 1887 publication called "Dictionary of Needlework" that has been republished by Dover.  I don't think herringbone stitch is particularly easy to do but this would be fun to try if you need neat rows of fur.
