Raymond Does Expo UPDATED

Vicky is back home for the ANG Seminar in Chicago and is thoughtfully sharing tales from what she saw and did there. Stirling Bags

While checking the stats on Blog this week I noticed several people were looking for Stirling bags. These are self-finishing tote bags from a company that went out of business when they lost their supplier, so these are hard to find. I did a little searching and came up with a few sources. The Needlepoint Nation Saga (and Magnet)

Once Upon a Time I set up a Facebook account so I could keep up with my family.   My nieces and cousins were posting photos there, so I had to have an account.  I don't much like Facebook, especially its emphasis on sharing everything, but you have to keep up with the times. (And the family!)   Once I had my Facebook page, I started exploring how it worked and discovered Groups.  Was it possible I could set up a group for my family and make our photos a little more private?  I set up a test group I called --for lack of imagination-- Needlepoint.   This was in 2011.

Fast forward to 2014.  As of this morning, Needlepoint has 5877 members.  They just all showed up!  I didn't invite anyone, although I think I did mention it on Blog once after people started arriving uninvited.  I now know what Internet billionaires feel like when their ship comes in (minus the cash of course).

Now there is a magnet designed by Rogue Needlepoint in conjunction with the online shop Needle Little More using the nickname of the group (Cynthia Baldwin's husband came up with it and it stuck).  Stitchers who belong to the group are starting to add it to their collection.

I should add that I have no affiliation with the companies that designed and sell this magnet and I do not profit from it.  Neither do the other admins I conned into helping asked to help run the group--Hi, Tara and Carole!--although Needle Little More did sent us and Cynthia Baldwin each a magnet, which was kind.   I expect there will be other merchandise eventually (two shops are considering designing NP Nation canvases), but I have no plans to be involved in their development and I won't make any money off merchandise based on the group.

I should also add my nieces and cousins have moved on and rarely use Facebook any more.  I am terrified of asking what social media they use now....

Suzhou Style Embroidery

Yesterday we went to the museum with Karen--today we are visiting an art gallery in California with Laura.   The shop specializes in Suzhou style embroidery.

She saw a piece entirely in tiny French knots, and another with smudged edges created by layering small straight stitches done in random directions using various colors.  The effects are amazing.

Stitching the Moon and Stars

Colleen of The Needle Works in Austin, Texas is on vacation but she has still posted a stitch diagram perfect for a light coverage moon or stars in the night sky of your latest piece.   She mixes eyelets and Smryna Crosses and other stitches to create a sort of moon crater effect for your full moon.  Individually some of these stitches would make for nice small stars, too.

New Hand Painted Silk Ribbons from Planet Earth

Orna Willis has added the new silk ribbons from Planet Earth Fibers to her Etsy store. She's including them in her thread and bead packs.  Another new silk ribbon, you say?  Why is that big news?  Because the edges of these ribbons are hand painted to have a different shade to them, making them unique.

Apparently these ribbons come in solid or tonal colors.  The tonal colors come in three widths:  4mm, 7mm and 10mm.  The solid comes only in 4mm.  I think the "tonal" ribbons are the ones with the hand painted edges but it is hard to tell from the Planet Earth site.  Regardless, this is worth exploring if you want a little zing in your silk ribbons.

Designers Who Stitch

There are more painted canvas designers than you'd think who actually stitch, too. SharonG is a great example and so is Melissa Shirley. There are many more but I didn't know Lynda Richadson of Dream House Ventures is one of them.   If you click on one of the photos you can see the details of Lynda's stitching including the "butterfly" stitching.  The AB beads in the border have an Aurora Borealis iridescent finish, by the way.  Wish we could see this in person!

A Leather "Jacket" for Your Needlepoint

Goodbye to Melita's Needles

Long ago I read an old article by Amy Bunger in which she said the most common mistake stitchers make is to stitch with a worn out needle.  Ever since I put my old needles in a medicine bottle and collect them to dispose of every February when the Japanese festival of Harikuyo is celebrated.  Of course the fact that I have acid hands and my needle start to tarnish fairly rapidly encourages me to do this.  Recently I have heard several folks say that they treasure their needles (which were so precious to our stitching ancestors) and only discard them when they bend or break.

So there are many schools of thought about how often to dispose of your needles.  Like so much else in needlepoint, there is no right or wrong answer.  But if your hands tarnish your needles, I think it is common sense to get rid of them and start anew with each new project.  Otherwise, how you feel about needles and how often to choose new ones is up to you.

The Bird Camera Strap

One of the members of Facebook's Needlepoint Nation is the talented Lee Tougas, who designs and stitches custom guitar and camera straps. Recently Lee made a video showing a bird camera strap being created for those of us fascinated by his work. I was very interested to see how a line drawing becomes real with the addition of thread and asked Lee if I could post the link here so you could see it, too.

Lee said Yes!  He also said, "Please encourage your readers to contact me if they have any questions. Lee.tougas@gmail.com.  I tell my customers the best I can hope to do is bring their photograph to mind when they look at the stitched image. There is no way 21 x 34 stitches can capture the detail of a megapixel photograph.  And, the first one I stitched was the worst one. I learn something new with every strap I stitch. I hope somebody else takes it up. It's a lot of fun, particularly when you hand the strap to the photographer. Wow!!!!"

This got me even more interested so I asked more questions and Lee was quite helpful in explaining his design process.  The word "Fibonacci" was tossed around and I had to know more.  Lee said:

"Fibonacci was a twelfth century Italian mathematician. Among other things, he is credited with introducing Arabic numerals to western civilization. Fibonacci numbers are numbers in the series 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc. Each number in the series is the sum of the previous two numbers. The ratio between two consecutive numbers is 1.618, the Golden Ratio, or Phi. Fibonacci believed this ratio defined the naturally pleasing proportion in things we humans find beautiful. If you Google Fibonacci, you will see pictures of George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, etc., with Fibonacci grids over their faces explaining why we find these people to be attractive. Fibonacci numbers also explain the number of spirals on a pine cone, a pineapple, an artichoke, a head of cauliflower or broccoli, the spiral of the nautilus sea animal, and the spiral of the Milky Way galaxy.

What does this have to do with photography? The aspect ratio of your HD television set is based upon Fibonacci number, as is the aspect ratio of 35mm film strips. Since I stitch on 18-ct canvas, a 21 X 34 box, with two rows of stitches between images and six rows on each edge, allows me to design a strap based upon each image occupying 2” in length and a strap a bit wider than 1 1/2”.

Every good photograph has a focal point. It is the object within the photograph that your eye rests upon if you let it wander around the frame. In a portrait, it is always the subject’s eye. For a well-composed photograph, the focal point should be off center, about one-third from side to side and from top to bottom. In photography, this is referred to as the Rule of Thirds. It is actually an approximation of a Fibonacci grid - on a Nautilus shell, the origin of the spiral.

So when I get a bunch of photographs to be stitched onto a strap, I look at each image to find the focal point. Then I place the focal point 1/3 from side to side and top to bottom, and build out from the focal point to fill the frame."

If you are stitching something likely to be handled by small children, you might want to use the clever finishing technique Terry's finisher came up with for her pirate ship and pirate standups--knobs on top!  Terry's grandsons will likely use the knobs to lift and position their pirates as they battle each other's ships.

So What's It Like In Embellishment Class?

Since I live so far from any shop and have never taken a canvas embellishment class, I was surprised to hear that they have several formats.   Robin King hints at how she runs embellishment classes here in her blog posting about her trip to Peacock Alley in Michigan.  Looks like she does a guide for everyone in class and they go over the stitches used in class.

The Finella: A New Laying Tool

When I saw Pamela Harding post this on Facebook, I asked her if I could repost her message and photos here.  Pamela said yes!  Thanks, Pam!


Pamela says:  Who doesn't need a new laying tool? I now have a new one for you to try called a Finella. They were featured in the What's New column of the last issue of Needlepoint Now and a few people have asked me about them.

They are hand-made by a welder friend of mine here in Washington state to my exact specifications - who better than a needlepointer to design a laying tool? There are two types of tools - a regular laying tool with a sharp end and a tool with a rounded end which is great for working with silk ribbon, flair, or any other thread that can get caught on a point. They come in 3", 4", and 5" lengths. Made of steel they have a slight more heft than a BLT or Teko Bari. They have square ends to keep from rolling and will stick to a magnet. They have been "blued" so that your skin oils won't discolor the metal.

Easy, Intermediate or Advanced?

Sheena has an idea that she things will help new stitchers who are browsing for a canvas online--shops should indicate somehow whether a canvas is likely to be easy, intermediate or advanced to stitch.  This isn't a foolproof system but it is going to be useful to an inexperienced stitcher.

What Do You Think This Is? UPDATED

I know nothing about silver or matchboxes but I am pretty sure this is not needlepoint.

I'd guess this is embroidery on painted linen.  I'd also guess the threads were hand tinted with paint after stitching since this is dated 1938.  As far as I know, overdyed threads were not common then.  What do you think?

Interesting, regardless.  I suppose a regular box of matches is slid into the area below the stitching and the silver matchbox holder sits on a dressing or occasional table to make the utilitarian object of a paper matchbox more decorative.

Important Safety Tip

When I noticed that Diane just bought a cover for her magnifier, it reminded me that a friend just had her magnifier burn a hole in a cushion.   Diane's new cover is from Carol Eix Designs (second link), but you can make one yourself fairly easily or just drape a large handkerchief over the glass when your magnifier isn't in use.

The Fuzzy Effect (Improved)

News from the World of Needlepoint UPDATED

There's been a delay in the publication of the new edition of Jo I. Christensen's Needlepoint Book. Instead of coming out this fall, it won't be published until the spring of 2015. I have heard it is going to be in hardback, not paperback, which probably accounts for the delay. 

UPDATE:  According to Amazon, the hardback version is still coming out the end of November 2014.  The Kindle edition will be ready in the spring.  In other words, who knows when it will be available?!

In other news, Ehrman Tapestry just announced they are reissuing the vegetable series from Kaffe Fassett due to popular demand.  You can see them as well as the similar fruit series here.

New Alphabet Chart Generator

If you have ever wanted to stitch a special phrase on blank canvas but didn't have the skills or confidence to graph out the letters yourself, this site is for you.   The lettering is around 15 threads high and in cursive without the ability to change the font but still this may be helpful.  I saw this on Facebook but naturally I can't remember who posted it.  Thanks, mystery person!
