TNNA Indianapolis May 2014

Note that all the links must be copy/pasted in this article because I cannot turn a tab into an article.  I had to copy them all from the tab before I renamed it to reuse it in May 2015.

TNNA's Summer Trade show was in Indianapolis in May 2014 instead of Columbus in June. This section of Blog shows off the newest things introduced there as well as new things that have premiered since the trade show. Please note that new stitch guide information is listed at the CH Stitch Guides blog at this link--

Amy Bunger is posting hints about her next home study piece on Facebook. No, I don't know who it is, either.
HOME STUDY HINT #1 -- The southern artist designing the next home study lives surrounded by still life in miniature.
STUDY HINT #2 -- The next Home Study Project is dedicated to a fictional, full-spectrum storyteller.
HOME STUDY HINT #3 -- I must be stuck on initials for Home Study Artists...MS,KCN, JP AND ??? (these initials can also stand for a guffaw)
HOME STUDY HINT #4 -- Some of the patterns are small (6" x 6"). All are rainbow-hued. The designs original from a time and place where this storyteller would have lived. "Her" fantasies weave through her own story molded by betrayal, murder, power, riches and (of course) love.
Home Study Hint #5 -- Still haven't taken the first stitch, but that doesn't mean that I haven't started. My notebook and thread bag area filling up with goodies to try on first canvas of ......... series. I will try to add a Hint #6 on AGS Facebook tomorrow or Monday. Looks like most of you have guessed the designer and "theme" so soon I need to start showing canvases and ideas.
Home Study Hint #6 -- This paisley is not quite finished but coming along. Did you know that in the 1920s and 1930s American quilters referred to the paisley design shape as "Persian Pickle?"

Amy's latest tidbits-
A. "Nights with Sheherazade" Part One & Part Two
B. Will offer an October Start date
C. Part One is three smaller canvases approximately 6" x 6" spread out in three different shipments
D. Part Two is a single larger canvas 16" x 10" spread out in three different lessons.
E. You can sign up for both parts or just one.

Randi at the World in Stitches has been seduced by the beautiful colors of overdyed 3.5mm silk ribbons from Treenway Silks. These aren't exactly new but I haven't ever seen photos before so I thought you'd like to have them mentioned here. Most silk ribbons are 4mm wide so these are a little narrower than usual, which you might find useful.

Nutcracker fans will be thrilled to hear dede Odgen has redone her nutcrackers pillow and stocking design to make individual ornaments, each featuring a single personable nutcracker. And --drumroll please--each ornament comes with a Robin King guide for it. Not only did dede rework her original design but Robin took the class guide she wrote for 3 Kittens and turned it into eight separate guides, one for each new ornament. Much happiness is in Needlepoint Land today!

Lizzie's Needlepoint

From the Lizzie Borden Warps and Wefts website, here are glimpses inside the bed and breakfast business's furnishings, which are period to the 1890s which is when Lizzie became famous (or infamous).   Note the footstool and the perforated paper sampler over the mantelpiece.  The bellows leaning against the fireplace may be painted or it may be stitched.  Hard to tell.
http://lizziebordenwarpsandwefts.com/2014/04/30/shopping-for-lizzie/

Any tours of Lizzie's later home Maplecroft or photos of the interior I've seen don't show any needlework, by the way.  Believe me, I watch for that!

If you are unfamiliar with Lizzie Borden, you can catch up here.

Creative Needle

This morning I was fascinated by a posting at Nimble Needle's blog profiling designs and jewelry boxes from Creative Needle. This is not a company I know much about, so I loved seeing their Italian pottery-inspired designs. To find out they make gorgeous self-finishing soft jewelry cases was just a bonus!

Here is Creative Needle's website.  Enjoy a nice long browse!  There are many many classics here, most inspired by pottery and china patterns, but that's not everything.  Don't miss the distinguished dogs or the intricate alphabet blocks, perfect for wild embellishment....

Woodlawn Fundraiser Sampler

Historic Woodlawn Plantation
This isn't strictly needlepoint, but I just discovered Nelly's Needlers, the group of stitchers who run the Woodlawn Plantation needlework show, have a sampler design for sale as a fund raiser.   You can see the sampler at the bottom of the page in the link below. The building is Woodlawn Plantation itself without the heavy shrubbery.  This is the shop blog for In Stitches, which is the shop closest to Woodlawn Plantation so you can buy the chart here.  Since we all want to support Nelly's Needlers and many needlepointers dabble in sampler stitching as well, I thought you guys would like to know about this.

Mary is Organized

Since we all love hearing about everyone else's organizational schemes, let's go to Mary's house and see how she stores her silk floss from Silk Mill.   Look carefully at the four inch wide black binders.  They have a little plastic cover on the front, which probably means you can lift the plastic and insert a sheet of paper on the front or back if you like.  You can also stick some papers in the half plastic pockets on the inside of the front and back cover.  I would put my paper color cards in these if I had them for these threads.
http://www.needlenthread.com/2014/04/organizing-silk-threads.html

I hope you find this inspiring.  By the way, Silk Mill's a French company with a website that'll knock your socks off with all the pretty colors.  I've not seen their floss but Mary's done a review (second link).

When Shops Help Each Other

As Erin prepares to open a new Florida needlepoint shop in Stuart, she is doing a little visiting with Needle Nicely in Vero Beach.
http://needlepointland.com/2014/05/14/coopetition/

Mary Agnes is helping Erin get started.  I love it when folks in the same line of business help each other out!  I think it's good for everyone, particularly their customers.

By the way, Erin's posted a video of the current state of her new shop.  You can read about how she currently plans to organize the shop and take a peek for yourself here.

Getting to Know the Shop Owners

I've been on the lookout for shop owner bios lately, since I love knowing more about the business owners who keep us in goodies, and I have three for you this morning.  I happened to stumble across this profile of Karen Milano, the owner behind Nimble Needle in New Jersey.  It makes me feel that we share something since we both taught ourselves crewel before we found needlepoint.

Then there is this look back at Needle Nicely's first shop location and building, courtesy of Mary Agnes Cussen whose shop is now in Vero Beach, Florida.  Blowing Rock, NC is not far where where I grew up across the state line in Tennessee.  I know those big old houses well!

And here we discover how 3 Kittens was reborn!

Does your shop owner have a great bio on their website?  Tell us about it in the Comments below or email me at chilly hollowat hot maildot com if the Comment section hates you.

Sherlock Knits

You saw it here second (right after NeedlePrint broke the news).   I want mine in pink, knitters!
http://needleprint.blogspot.com/2014/05/knit-power.html

By the way, I have no idea what politicized knitting is.  Must be a Brit thing.

Creating an Original

Sue Dulle was struck by inspiration while shopping for a gift and designed a piece of needlepoint instead. Follow her creative adventure here--

Amazing Tape

Needlepoint Tool Time has something new/old in stock--Amazing Tape.   I have never heard of Amazing Tape but apparently it has been around a long time.  You cut a piece and stretch it around something and it sticks to itself.  It looks sort of like cling wrap but it clings for years and is reusable.  Tisha is using it to wrap ribbons and spools of thread with loose ends that keep escaping.

It sounds like Spanx for threads!  However, I am not advocating wrapping your own middle with this stuff.  For one thing, it'll take rolls and rolls and you will probably crinkle when you walk.

(If you aren't familiar with the movie stars' best friend Spanx, here is a bit about their products.)

Pat's Family in Needlepoint

Pat Wilson has assembled a gallery of original pillow designs she has designed and stitched to honor various members of her family. Aren't they great?  There's a wedding pillow and others that are dedicated to the memory of her grandparents.  It's a wonderful stitched family memory album.

Puddling--with Background and Railroading

I love listening to Sue talk about her stitching.  You always learn something. Today it's about how to keep overdyes from streaking when you stitch with them and how to railroad. There's a nice background stitch diagrammed, too!

By the way, the bottom area of her canvas she shows off is magnificent.

Is It Needlepoint? Is It Art?

Connie tackles the question of needlepoint's place in the art world head on!
http://conniepickeringstover.com/needlepoint-or-fiber-art/

I'd asked Connie the question because several friends have had pieces rejected by galleries because they are based on pained canvases, which have been designed by others.  The art world hasn't made up its mind about the collaborative art which is needlepoint on painted canvases.   What do you think?  Is needlepoint art?  Are painted canvases derivative art?  Do you have to be doing original designs to be accepted as an artist?

A New Silk Ribbon Embroidery Book

Hazel Blomkamp has written a brief review of a new silk ribbon embroidery book written by her friend Di van Niekirk in collaboration with Mariana Zherdeva.  If you are a fan of SRE, you are sure to be charmed by this collaboration between a South African and Russian stitcher.  The stitching world is very small indeed!

Blogger Hates Me

For the second time this month Blogger is acting up. It won't let me post the correct link to the Canvas of the Day this morning.   Anyone interested in Marie Barber's Frenchwoman at Court from Colors of Praise will need to click on this link instead of the photo.  I have corrected the link twice and it displays properly in HTML but clicking on the photo takes you to Needlepoint Land's blog.

Sorry.  I tried to fix this but there is a bug in the code somewhere that I can't access to fix.

By the way, this article has published but isn't visible.  Excuse me while I go into the bathroom to scream....
