Watson and Pencils and Other Problems

Oops!  Damaged Background to Right of Owl

All sorts of things can go wrong with your needlepoint canvas.   I'm not talking stitch errors or thread dye lot problems--I'm thinking about accidental spills and marks.  Just listen to what happened to Perles Before Twine when stitching the charted face and hands of Gay Ann Roger's Queen Elizabeth I portrait.
http://www.perlebeforetwine.com/2012/pencil-on-canvas-a-cautionary-tale/

Something similar happened to me while stitching my Day of the Dead lady.  The photo above is the upper right corner of Belleza.  The white area you see is where I found dried dog slobber, courtesy of Watson the Wonder Dog, who is a big slobbering hound.  Belleza is always covered when I am not stitching her, so this is probably from a time I put her down in my stitching chair to answer the phone, etc.  I thought distilled water and a Q-tip would take the slobber off and it did--but the paint came off with it!  I consulted with Peggi of Tapestry Fair (Belleza's creator) who said she'd always suspected dog slobber would damage painted canvases.  Peggi uses high quality Liquitex or Golden Acrylic paints for her designs, too.  There were two ways we could handle the problem--Peggi could repaint the area or I could stitch the background with a full coverage stitch.

As you can see, I'd already chosen a lovely spot motif for Belleza's background.  The Southwestern style crosses are called zias after the Zia Pueblo Indians of the Southwest who use the sacred symbol on their pottery.  A zia decorates the flag of New Mexico and you often see the symbol used as a sun in Peter Ashe's Southwestern designs.  As much as I like my version of the zia, I had never been totally happy with it as the background, so I went back to my stitch books and came up with another background, a Flat Variation stitch from Marnie Ritter.

DMC 333 to the rescue!

But before I replaced one background stitch with another, I needed to rip out the zia shapes and do a little coverup on the white patch where dried dog slobber removed the paint.  Above you see my background thread (High Cotton in Periwinkle 310) and a matching skein of DMC #333 cotton floss.  With one ply of the DMC cotton, I basketweaved over the whiter area to help hide it once I stitch the area with my background stitch.  Here is what the background looks like when restitched with my new background stitch, one of Marnie Ritter's Flat Variation stitches, done right over the basketweave.

Background Restitched Over Basketweave

Can you see the slobber spot now?  In person it is a little more visible since there are empty holes among the various stitch motifs where the basketweave under-stitching is obvious, but I don't think a casual viewer would notice.

Marnie Ritter's Flat Variation, Diagrammed By Sheena James

Courtesy of Sheena James, I have my background stitch diagrammed so that you can see what I used better.  My High Cotton floss is a very close match to the background color, making good photographs difficult.  Note the two uncovered threads between each row.  To make sure to hide this flaw in the background, I added Plan B, which is to draw attention from the spot with something eye-catching.  I put small silver beads in the holes between stitch rows.

Look at the Beads, Not the Spot

I think only Blog readers will know where to look to find the dog slobber spot now, especially once the owl is stitched.  That will further draw attention away from the flaw in the background.  It will look like a shadow of the owl.  The moral is to keep your canvas covered at all times but that marks and damage can be hidden if you are clever.

Needlepoint Now News

Dale at Canvases Be Gone brings us news of a change at Needlepoint Now magazine plus a controversy over the magazine's publishing the names of finishers.  Thanks for the update and the news and for your support for a magazine I enjoy very much!  Without Dale's posting I wouldn't' have known that folks were unhappy with the magazine, although of course I did know that many folks are not thrilled to have the magazine go from line drawn projects to publishing painted canvas stitch guides.
http://www.canvasesbegone.com/blog/needlepoint-now/

Wherever you stand on that topic (and even though I write stitch guides, I am sorry to see the magazine concentrating so much on counted thread and painted canvas designs since I love line drawn designs), Needlepoint Now is a much anticipated publication at my house.

WARNING! DANGER!

Ruth Schmuff just sent a warning email to her Bedecked and Beaddazzled newsletter recipients and regular customers that someone has hacked her customer database and has added code that sends emails anyone placing an order asking for their credit card numbers to be emailed to whoever's pretending to be Ruth "to confirm their purchase."  DON'T DO IT!  Ruth never ever does business this way.

It's a good time to remember that any website is vulnerable to this sort of thing and doing business by phone is safer.  No one is safe these days from cyber criminals but it helps to do business via check or Paypal or phone when you can.  If you get a request for your credit card info via email, check before you send it and give it over the phone if you can.  No email is totally secure.

Three Sisters, Three Hairstyles

It's been a while since we've talked about hair in needlepoint, so I was thrilled to see this Bargello Needlepont article about a painted canvas project that features three women, each with a different hair style that reflects the personality of each.  Each sister wears a different headband in a different Bargello pattern as well, but I was particularly interested in the way each type of hair was created.  If you enlarge the photo as much as possible, you'll see just how intricate a pattern was created with two of the three hair treatments.  (The third person's hair is barely visible so the focus there is on the headband.)  Very interesting!  We forget sometimes that hair can be stylized and patterned in intricate stitches.  It doesn't have to be realistic to be wonderful hair.
http://bargelloneedlepoint.com/three-sisters-in-bargello-needlepoint/

I think the design is by Clarice, still distributed by Barbara Russell.  I am not certain, though, so if you know, please tell us in the comments (or email me directly at chilly hollow at hot maildotcom if you can't make Blogger's Comments work).

TNNA Columbus is Over UPDATED

The shops and designers and tool manufacturers are all leaving Columbus now, heading home.    I hope this means that there will be new eye candy for us to see on their websites soon.

Pocket Full of Stitches pointed out there are new items up on the Kathy Schenkel Designs website.
http://www.kathyschenkel.com/new/0.html

Some of Associated Talents' very popular Seaside ornament and mini sock series is available for viewing on their website.  Sadly, the charming stitched models aren't pictured yet.
http://www.atneedlepoint.com/CanvasLookup.asp?Category=New%20Arrivals&SubCategory=&QueryPage=0

Painted Pony Designs has added five new angel canvas photos and several new dress form canvases to their Facebook page.  Search for Paintedponydesigns Debbiewoodard to see them.

Bijoux Glints

I've managed to get my hands on the new white core Bijoux thread line which is called Glints.  That's what you see in the photo above.  There are four colors, from left to right :  gold (White Gold 423), a lighter gold (Bronze 422), silver (Silver 441) and white (Diamond 491).  The white has a slight ivory cast to the white in the spool.  Here are the traditional black core colors in case you'd like to compare them.  Whether "white core" or "black core" this is a strong, thin metallic thread.

UPDATE:  Labors of Love has posted new perfume bottle and clip on bird designs on their website.

Introducing Barcelona Coaster and More

The Columbus trade show is winding down a bit, which means painted canvas designers are starting to post designs on their websites.  Traditionally, designers kept their designs out of sight until the shops who went to the trade show got to see them, and although with blogging and Facebook that tradition is starting to disappear, many designers stick with this procedure.

Ruth Schmuff has introduced several new fairies to her Tis The Season line.  She also has added a pair of sisters/friends designs.  All come in two sizes so you can pick the larger or smaller depending on your time constraints and how you want to finish the designs.  You can see the newest items at the top of this page.
http://www.bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/products.php?catid=17&firstcid=17

Robin King has reported in on the Sunday doings in Columbus.  She promises more photographs once she gets home and has computer access.  Blogging via smart phone isn't as convenient as using your trusty home computer and good Internet connection!
http://needlepointstudyhall.blogspot.com/2012/06/tnnacolumbus-day-two.html

Amy Bunger's added more new items to her website straight from Columbus.
http://www.amybunger.com/market_items.html

Needle Works has added a new summary page to their blog about all the market goodies, including Sandy Arthur's new NP Shapes book.
http://www.stitchinginthetexashillcountry.com/the_needle_works/2012/06/how-exciting-is-this.html

She has also added a few new photos to the Amy's Golden Strand Facebook photo album from the show.  Chaparral Needlework has also added more new photos on their FB page. If you have a Facebook account, search on the names exactly as I wrote them to find the site.

As promised, I've updated the CH Stitch Guides blog with a photo of my latest Leigh Designs project, the small size of Barcelona from the ESPANA series.  Now you can see just how good a job I did emphasizing the various areas in this rather abstract design without making any one area too prominent.
http://chstitchguides.blogspot.com/2012/06/introducing-barcelona.html

Leigh has updated her website with photos of all the new small sizes of the ESPANA series and also has posted photographs of her latest Fash Insert pieces, created to fit into the Lee eBook reader covers.  The links to each section are on her home page.  The eBook covers have a great small dragon, a Chinese lady in all her finery, an homage to Edgar Allen Poe and more.  Hint:  If you sail, are from Texas or love the little church in the dale, you need to visit these.

The TNNA Report: Friday Fun UPDATED

The first day at the TNNA show is Set Up Day. All the vendors spend the day hanging curtains, pinning up canvases on the curtain "walls" and setting up little tables and displays so that shop owners can see everything easily to order goodies to tempt their customers.  Robin is helping out at the Needle Deeva booth, so she took photos of everything as it went from huge empty hall to cozy display.  Looking at the photos, the first is Associated Talents with their spider leg stands, the second is Barbara Bergsten showing off her cheerful "shift" ornaments, and the last photos are of the Needle Deeva booth being born.
http://needlepointstudyhall.blogspot.com/2012/06/tnnacolumbus-2012-day-one.html

By the way, the Needle Deeva website is updated with photos of all their new things.
http://www.needledeeva.com/whats_new.html

Of course not everyone at the show is a vendor.  The really important people are the shop owners.  The Needle Bug is there after a very long trip.
http://theneedlebug.com/2012/06/okay-the-twelve-hour-trip-to-columbus/

Not everything runs smoothly.  Needle Works is going to have to post show updates to their Facebook page instead of their blog.  Search for "The Needle Works" or click on this link if you have a Facebook account.
http://www.stitchinginthetexashillcountry.com/the_needle_works/2012/06/hello-from-columbus-i-will-be-posting-updates-from-the-show-floor-on-our-facebook-page-httpswwwfacebookcompag.html

Speaking of Facebook, Barbara Elmore has a photo of the Sundance booth and Amy's Golden Strand has photos from the Sample It displays.  Associated Talents has posted photos of their booth and the Friday evening events on their FB page.  Quail Run Needlework Inc. and Serendipity Needleworks both posted photographs from the classes they took on Friday.

UPDATE:  What's the Point? is also posting photographs from Market on their FB page.  Look for the Kirk and Hamilton pieces and new designs from Melissa Shirley, Maggie, Kathy Schenkel, Renaissance Designs,  BB Designs and a white birds rug from Colors of Praise that is to die for.

It's a Mod World in Columbus

Ruth Schmuff has released a new stitch guide (written by the wildly talented Sheena James) for another one of her Flirty Girl canvases just in time for the Columbus market.  If you need to return to the 1960s, the era of mini skirts, high boots, Carnaby Street and of course long eyelashes and long straight hair with a flip at the ends, this is your canvas.

Associated Talents, Eye Candy and TNNA

Stitchers with Facebook accounts can sign in and search for either "Associated Talents" or "The National NeedleArts Association" to see photographs from Columbus posted there.  Associated Talents has posted progress photos of their booth building.  First there is nothing but drapes, then canvases appear and there's a little table, too.  They have even taken a photo of their neighboring booth, Barbara Bergsten Designs.  All this has to be set up today (Friday) before the Sample It program tonight.

TNNA has just posted photos of the line of shop owners waiting for Sample It, which doesn't start for hours!  Somehow I don't think it is just us stitchers eager to see the newest thing!

If you aren't a FB fan, you can go visit the Eye Candy blog where Ada has posted photographs of her newest designs.

However, the latest thing isn't always what catches my eye.  How about these older canvases that have just come back from the finisher's or framer's?

Creepy Little Feet and Special Needles

Peggi at Tapestry Fair has been busy stitching a model for one of the Tapestry Fair canvases, this one of little desert lizards or geckos.  Click on the photo of her progress and take a good look at their tiny little toes.  Bullions!  (By the way, don't miss the sunglasses.  LOL)
http://tapestryfair.blogspot.com/2012/06/lizard-toes-and-new-needle.html?spref=fb

Peggi stumbled across the perfect needle to use to make such long wraps--a Sashiko needle.  I'd never heard of such a thing, although I have seen Sashiko embroidery.  Looks like the needles come in assorted sizes, so make sure if you mail order that you get long ones.  Click on Kits if you are interested in seeing small Sashiko patterns.
http://www.shiboridragon.com/Sashiko-Notions.htm

I found an interesting Sashiko tutorial here.  The article shows off the various Sashiko needles available today, too.  You can follow the links to buy Japanese versions of Sashiko needles instead of Clover brand ones.  I asked Peggi if the two inch long beading needles would work as well as Sashiko needles but she says the Sashikos are much thicker than beading needles and stand up to the wraps and pulls of making bullions much better.

Very interesting!  Thanks for the tip, Peggi!

http://needlepointstudyhall.blogspot.com/2012/06/have-teaching-manual-will-travel.html

She's also making banners and publicity sheets and putting the new canvases on the Needle Deeva site (follow the link).
http://needlepointstudyhall.blogspot.com/2012/06/fab-firs-by-needledeeva-and-vicky-de.html

She'll be joined by Vicky DeAngelis in the Needle Deeva booth.  Vicky's busy making kits, too.  She's counting crystals.

Over in Texas Hill Country, more class prep is underway and there are things to see once Cynthia Thomas arrives.  Besides three classes, she has a set of Melissa Shirley Twelve Days of Christmas angels to write stitch guides for and there is a certain Ghoul pillow at Shelly Tribbey's booth to admire.

Sure wish I was going, too!

UPDATE:  Barbara has everything all planned out....

The Bargello Garden and Other Treats

Scarlet Thread has posted a photo of the newest Jeff Kulick design, his 2011 Woodlawn blue ribbon piece called "There's a Garden in My Bargello."  Jeff has come up with two other color variations if you aren't into his green version, the threads for which Scarlet Thread has photographed to tempt you.

The shop also has new Bargello pieces from Carolyn Mitchell to tempt you.  It's an explosion of color and pattern, whichever design you like best.

Sad News UPDATED

Friends and customers of Aristeia Needlepoint will be sad to hear the owner Wendy Harwood died today after a long illness.
http://melissashirleydesigns.com/galcol/index.cgi?index=1311381251_17255&col=158

She was a very talented stitcher and wrote many stitch guides for her friend Melissa Shirley.  I think Autumn Bouquet was her masterpiece but it is really hard to choose since she was a creative and interesting stitcher.  She will be missed by her many friends.

Conquering the Painted Canvas

Leigh Designs' Barcelona Coaster
As you know I stitch models for various designers and create a detailed stitch guide for the shops to sell along with the canvas.  I just finished working on the small 6x6 "coaster" size of Barcelona, which is one of Leigh Design's ESPANA series.   These designs are inspired by Spanish themes and are all on yellow 18 count canvas.  You can see the original large size of Barcelona and the other seven designs in the series here. The small coaster-sized designs will be revealed at the Columbus trade show.
http://www.leighdesigns.com/Grp624x.html

Above is the canvas that Leigh sent me to stitch for Columbus.  As you can see, this isn't a realistic canvas.  I normally choose canvases that are realistic but when you do stitch guides for designers, you don't always choose what you work on.  So that's one problem for me--I don't have the normal clues that realistic designs provide.  I know exactly what a real cosmos blossom looks like but the flower above is stylized.  I also see a problem due to the lace overlay:  What does one do to stitch that?  Should I stitch the background and leaves the same way for the area under the lace as I do for the area that has no lace on top?

The first thing I do when I have a canvas to figure out is to decide on the focal points, the places that are important to emphasize.  That is easy for this piece--there are the two flower/leaf clusters, the lace on the side, and the round blue and white areas behind the flowers.  I decided since this canvas had the special problem of having an area (the lace) that is on top of other areas, I needed to decide on a stitch for the yellow background and the leaves first.

I often choose stitches that echo the shape of an area that I have to fill in.  Looking at the grid of the lace, Scotch stitches immediately came to mind.  Not all the blocks that the lace grid create are exactly the same size but Scotch stitches can be made larger or smaller by adding or taking away some of the / stitches.
http://www.needlepoint.org/StitchOfTheMonth/98-06.php

If you keep looking at the lace area, you'll see some of the "holes" in the center of the lace floral patterns are round, not grid boxes.  I decided I would put Scotch stitches in the middle of the large holes but simple tent stitches in the smaller holes.  A mix of tent and Scotch stitches could also do the leaves that you glimpse under the lace.

I still had to decide what to use for the lace itself and how to handle the yellow background that isn't under the lace.  Studying the Scotch stitch diagram above from the ANG website, I realized I could put a bead in the corners where the Scotch stitches meet and make the yellow background that was away from the lace richer if I could find the right color of bead.  It would be easy to continue the layout of the Scotch stitches by just counting over from the lace area.  So that's what I did for the yellow background.  Scotch stitches with beads in the corners for the non-lace area; no beads under the lace grid.  Tent stitches in the lace-covered areas that had too many color changes to do Scotch stitches or were too small for one Scotch box to fit.

Each choice you make on a canvas influences the next choice.  Now I had a gridded background that was going to be rich in pattern and glitter with the addition of beads.  That meant I had to choose something for the lace that would match the glitter of the non-lace covered yellow background.  Easy!  More beads!  I used beads for the gray lace.  It was harder to find the right shade of bead for the lace since gray beads are rare  (there are lots of silver shades but not much dark gray) but with the help of Sundance and Leigh herself, I ended up with some wonderful blue-gray beads that make the lace look terrific.

That left me with the flowers, leaves and the rounded patterns which I decided were Spanish pottery plates.  I'm afraid you'll have to wait for Barcelona to be revealed at Columbus to see how I made the plain flowers and leaves stand up to a beaded background and beaded lace, or how I stitched the "plates" to make them a calm oasis amongst the fancy patterns and beads.

However, analyzing a canvas before you begin and having the faith in yourself to work it a step at a time, making decisions as you go, is how to embellish a canvas successfully.  Sure there will be things you aren't totally happy with, but each time you do this, you will become more confident and will learn to follow your instincts to stitch a canvas that is expressive of your personality and the vision you saw of the design when you bought it with your hard-earned cash.

You can do this if you think about the areas you want to emphasize or de-emphasize before you start stitching and if you are just brave enough to trust the voice in your head that says "I like this" or "I don't like that."

If you are a shop I hope you get to see Barcelona at the Leigh Designs booth.  You can judge for yourself how successfully I met the challenges of this canvas.  For everyone else, I'll post a photograph on June 25 of the finished Barcelona at the CH Stitch Guides blog.

Paternayan is Saved! (Maybe)

Last night I received an email from Ken at Suripaco.com.  I'm quoting it below with permission. Here's Ken's website, by the way.
http://www.suripaco.com/

"We recently acquired a large number of 8 yard Patternayan skeins as a result of our purchase of the JCA dye facility in Pepperell/Townsend, MA. It appears to be the newer yarn with similar sized strands (3 plys of 2 ply yarn). We would be interesting in selling all the skeins as a single lot once we get them catalogued over the next 4-6 weeks (probably 2-3000 skeins). Price is negotiable. We currently own the rights to Patternayan and once the dye house is operating in Maine (hopefully, late this summer), we are considering reproducing the yarn as before. We are considering importing New Zealand wool (as with the original) for the new production. I am currently working with two commercial spinning mills to manufacture the yarn strands and do the plying. We would definitely be interested in your comments and perceived needs."

So I emailed Ken right back and asked if I could post his message here on Blog where stitchers and shop owners would see it.  This is his reply.

"You are welcome to publish my note on the blog--I would like to reach out to people interested and knowledgable re Paternayan yarn to help us decide if we are getting the hand and spin qualities correct (although I perceive hand is not nearly as important for this yarn) as well as the durability required for needlepoint work. How important is the variation in the strands? As you can imagine, having to create 3 different 2 ply yarns to put into the three ply finished product increases production costs significantly. Is it your impression the Paternayan yarn is a worsted (or at least semi-worsted) product. Apparently, a number of years ago the quality of the British produced yarn dropped off so JCA switched to a US supplier(and probably US wool) but their quality was sporadic as well.

Yes, SuriPaco is us--it is something we do when we are not at our day jobs."

I told Ken that as far as I was concerned, the traditional Paternayan with three plies, each slightly different in size, was an interesting quirk that made Paternayan wool unique, but certainly was not very important, especially comported to the colors, twist and durability of Paternayan wool.  I also let two shop owners know about Ken's stock of Paternayan skeins.  But that's just one stitcher's opinion.  If you have thoughts about Ken's questions above or are interested in talking to him about buying some of his old stock, leave a comment below where Ken can see it or email me at chilly hollow at hotmaildotcom and I'll make sure Ken gets the message.

Counted Delights

Scarlet Thread has posted photographs (and a teaser) of new charts they have at the shop.  The new items are from Freda's Fancy Stitching, Brenda Kocher and Nancy's Needle.  The hint is a piece of a new design from Jeff Kulick.  I can't wait to see what he has released!  I saw four new designs from him on display at Woodlawn, one of which got a blue ribbon and another of which won my I'd Take That Home If I Could award.  We'll have to wait for Sara Leigh to post more about Jeff's new chart and for me to get my act together enough to write about Woodlawn.

Let's Make A Pillow (or Two)

I am cheap so I do a lot of my own finishing. It's not as hard as you would think, although you do have to be patient (always MY downfall!) and take it step by step. A sewing machine is useful although I often add trim around the edges of an ornament with hand sewing.  Good instructions make it all clearer so I was glad to see the Focus On Finishing blog has just posted two tutorials on how to make two styles of small ornamental pillows.  The stitching is counted thread but the finishing is the same for any type of needlework you want to make into a pillow.
http://focusonfinishing.wordpress.com/2010/12/05/pin-pillow-tutorial-1/

http://focusonfinishing.wordpress.com/2010/12/06/pin-pillow-tutorial-2/

Anne's site is a great resource so bookmark it for finishing ideas and help the next time you decide to turn some of your completed stitching into something to display and use.

If you shudder every time you think of "sewing machine" then this little coaster project is going to be right up your alley.

However, if you absolutely do not want to tackle your own finishing or you are looking for ideas have fun browsing this great finishing website.

Off to Martha's

No, we aren't going to visit Martha Stewart, we are going to Martha's Vineyard, one of the two large islands off the coast of Massachusetts.   Nantucket gets all the press these days but Martha's Vineyard is more to my taste.  Looks like Althea's been having fun on the island as she has a shop review for us.  Click on the hyperlink in the article for a brief description of the shop and hours with plenty of pictures to enjoy.

More Petei Sources

I finally made it to Woodlawn's needlework exhibit and enjoyed every minute! I'm working on my report but this will take me several weeks as I have deadlines to meet first.  I also hit the shops and saw several of the Alice in Wonderland series and other Petei canvases at Waste Knot, so if you are looking for one of these pieces, talk to the staff there to see what they still have. Prices are around $20-25 if I remember correctly, depending on the size of the canvas you want.
http://wasteknotneedlepoint.com/

The French Knot reports that although they have all the stitch guides available for the Santas they have offered over the years, the kit inventory is very low.  They still have these in stock--Gypsy (2012), Kiss Me (2011), French Bread (2011) and Cacti  (2011) Santas.  Their 2012 Santa club is on hold while we wait to see if Petei is able to sell her line.
http://www.thefrenchknot.com/x-petei.htm

I think there are several Petei canvases lurking in Designer's Desk's Bargain Basement.  Isn't that Tweedledum and Tweedlede from the Alice in Wonderland set?
http://www.designersdeskusa.com/DB3.html

There are Santas and an angel here.
http://www.designersdeskusa.com/DB5.html

There are also new Petei canvases available at Canvases Be Gone.  Dale mentioned them in her last blog posting.  Click on the link and you'll find canvases from the Peter Pan, nutcracker, and kings and queens series plus several miscellaneous canvases.
http://www.canvasesbegone.com/blog/already-thursday/

I should mention since I linked to Canvases Be Gone that their blog, although listed in my blog list below, never shows up in the feeds there.  You'll need to either bookmark the blog or use RSS readers to get updates.  Blog doesn't take feeds from blogs that are part of a website instead of being created through free software like WordPress or Blogger.  I have no idea why but you don't want to miss out on Dale's postings.

Columbus Goodies Before The Show Starts

Because the TNNA show is about to happen, all sort of new things are appearing all over the Internet. Which is a good thing or else we'd have to storm the trade show, right?

Ruth Schmuff has revealed the new fairy tale collages (and more) from Eye Candy.  I love fairy tales--that's all I read when I was seven--and canvases that celebrate the stories I've adored for decades are something I really like.  Besides, a pirate mermaid and a Texas witch are a must in our lives! Follow the link to see everything on Ruth's shop site.  (She distributes Eye Candy.)  If the crown fits....
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2012/06/eyecandy-is-telling-fairytales.html

Kristine Kingston's getting ready!
http://baltimoreneedleworks.wordpress.com/2012/06/14/what-i-have-been-doing/

Barbara Bergsten has added beach babes to her line.  Hilarious!
http://createneedlepoint.typepad.com/create_needlepoint/2012/06/needlepoint-beach-beauties-1.html

Vicky gives us a glimpse of the Needle Deeva kits that will be briefly available at the TNNA show and that will also be featured in Needlepoint Now later this summer.
http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/06/15/sampleit/

Patt and Lee has three new types of designs this year.  There are the colorful animals series, the holiday goodies (Halloween and Christmas) and Other (which included religious symbols, people and more).
http://pattandleedesigns.com/home

I am pretty sure TNNA doesn't want to be overrun with panting needlepointers, who "need" new canvases, charts, threads and tools.  (And we need them NOW.)  Thanks for the photos, folks.  TNNA owes you one.

Feeling Crabby

I'm feeling crabby but in a good way. Check out the progress that a shop in Florida is making on several of Barbara Bergsten's crab frame weights.
http://createneedlepoint.typepad.com/create_needlepoint/2012/06/needlepoint-stitch-of-the-week.html

http://absolutelyneedlepoint.wordpress.com/2012/06/06/stitch-of-the-week-in-progress/

I've been told that Edie and Ginger created the first frog shaped frame weights.  These little critters are decorated with various design on their backs, then made up into stuffed animals that have weights inside so you can put one on the corner of your canvas when it is on stretcher bars, let the bottom of the canvas hang over a table edge, and stitch with two hands.  Great for travel and for those who love working at a table but don't use a frame or one of those hardware store clamps!

How about this wonderful JP Needlepoint "treasure box"?

Or these EyeCandy pillows finished by Marlene;s?
http://eyecandyneedleart.blogspot.com/2012/06/more-fab-finishing.html

My favorite finished pieces, however, are these two SharonG compositions called CatWalk and DogWalk.  I own this version of CatWalk which I plan to stitch for my cousin who loves cats one day.  Congratulation on the wonderful stitches chosen for these, Robin!

And the Winner Is.... UPDATED

I promised last week to draw names from commentators to my article about Brenda Hart's It's In the Bag book. This little spiral bound book is all about twenty purse canvases from The Red Thread and how to stitch them, with stitch guides by Brenda herself.  The book has a great photo of each finished purse and a succinct stitch guide for each.  If you are a purse fan, you need this book.

I listed all the names of those who entered and went to Random.org and drew a number.  The winner is the MN Stitcher!

Please send your snail mail address to me at chilly hollow at hot mail dot com and I'll drop my It's In the Bag in the mail to you next week.  After all, I am not a purse collector and this great little book needs a home where it will be read often and cherished.

Many thanks to everyone who expressed interest in this book.  I wish I had a copy for all of you.  In the meantime here are all the purse canvases.  Just keep clicking Next.  There are actually 42 of them but only half made it into the book.
http://www.redthreaddesigns.com/Pages/Bags/Purse01Pg.html

By the way, here's another photo of one of the purses from the book, stitched by Dale who is working on the 4th of July flag bag from the book right now.

Bullions and Milleners

Lots of people have trouble making bullion knots.  Lots of other people say to use a milliner's needle. But no one has explained how to make a bullion knot with a milliner needle as well as Unbroken Thread does in this article.

The Naming of the Thread

If you've ever looked at the names of your threads (not the numbers) and wondered why things like Gloriana's Sierra Haze or Lucky Old Sun got their names, you'll want to read Access Commodities' article about the special challenges of naming threads that are reproductions of ones available to the 17th Century needleworker.

By the way, I prefer "Dead Gold" as it is more descriptive of the color in question.  How about you?

Collegiate Luggage Tags

I've profiled Kristine Kingston here before, but mostly I talked about her stitch guides and her blog.  Today I can show off some of Kristine's custom collegiate luggage tags, thanks to Diane who ordered three.  Kristine does lots of custom designs for folks, but these are especially wonderful mementos of college life.
